The White House has made it clear that tech executives must develop AI safely or risk further regulation.

Artificial intelligence is one of the hottest and most controversial technologies. Companies are raising to deploy generative AI, but many critics — including those responsible for major advances — are warning that it poses a grave risk to humanity.

The White House called some of the industry’s leading executives to a meeting with a view to reinforcing their responsibility to develop AI safely:

The President and Vice President were clear that in order to realize the benefits that might come from advances in AI, it is imperative to mitigate both the current and potential risks AI poses to individuals, society, and national security. These include risks to safety, security, human and civil rights, privacy, jobs, and democratic values.

According to BBC News, the executives were told it was their responsibility to “ensure the safety and security of their products,” and that the White House may introduce more legislation if they failed to do so.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the executives were “surprisingly on the same page on what needs to happen,” in regard to regulation.
