Apple’s Mac shipments have plummeted 40% in one of the clearest signs yet that the pandemic-fueled heyday is over.

Apple normally bucks most PC sales trends, maintaining healthy numbers regardless of the overall state of the industry. According to a report by IDC, even Apple is not immune to the current economic trends, with the company seeing a 40.5% drop in shipments year-over-year.

While all PC makers saw a drop in shipments, Apple’s was the biggest. Lenovo saw a 30.3% drop, HP 24.2%, Dell 31.0%, and ASUS 30.3%. The rest of the industry combined saw a 26.0% drop.

While there’s not much hope of things turning around in 2023, next year could see things turn around.

“By 2024, an aging installed base will start coming up for refresh,” said Linn Huang, research vice president, Devices and Displays at IDC. “If the economy is trending upwards by then, we expect significant market upside as consumers look to refresh, schools seek to replace worn down Chromebooks, and businesses move to Windows 11. If recession in key markets drags on into next year, recovery could be a slog.”
